Kate Hodges - vocals
Nik Hodges - production
Formatic are Kate and Nik Hodges from north London, England.
Growing up in a musical family they learned to play and compose at an early age but only started writing and recording together relatively recently. Coming from rock, pop, and classical backgrounds respectively, their writing encompasses many styles although the sound they're best known for is a hybrid of electronic production and melodic songwriting, mixing the better elements of early synth pop with a modern approach. Handling all vocals and instrumentation themselves, Formatic are a fully self-contained unit. After setting up their studio, they wrote and recorded a few album's worth of songs and started circulating demos.
One
of the demos came to the attention of Guy Fletcher, head of leading independent
publishers MCS. Suitably impressed he passed it on to his head of A&R,
producer Darran Bennett, who promptly signed them.
This resulted in the band working with top producer Dave Bascombe (Depeche
Mode, Peter Gabriel) on a new version of one of their tracks 'Day Will Come'.
Soon after, Formatic released 'Over To You' as a club only white label, which ended up reaching no8 in the club chart. It was the highest placed white label on the chart for over two months.
Formatic also found time to get involved with various TV and collaboration projects. Contributing the theme tune to VH1/MTV's 'BSTV' show, and working on tracks for Cicada and Alex Gold among others.
The duo's profile rose further with TV and radio airplay - most notably Channel 4's 'Sugar Rush'. And inclusion on the acclaimed Electro album 'Robopop - The Return' with their single 'State Of Play'.
'The State Of Play EP' was their full debut release on Planet Clique, and it quickly became another club favourite as well as gaining Radio 1 prime time airplay. They also stepped up their remix work, most notably for the legendary B52s, and contributed music for high profile TV ad campaigns.
